Reconstructive surgery in animals is most commonly associated with wounds from trauma or those created after aggressive removal of a mass from the skin. This type of surgery can consist of primary closure by stretching skin to the area that needs to be closed, skin flaps by moving large amounts of vascularized skin to new areas while keeping the blood supply intact (Axial Pattern Flaps) or free skin graft by completely removing the skin, preparing it for placement and then suturing it to a different area. There are many different ways to approach reconstructive surgery in the veterinary field.
