The parathyroid glands consist of 4 little glands that are in the neck of animals. They play a big role in regulation of calcium levels in the blood. We can see problems with increased calcium due to a growth on the parathyroid glands. We surgically remove the gland that is affected and then the calcium levels come down. Along with surgery it sometimes requires medical treatment to supplement calcium once the gland is removed. Over time the remaining glands will start to work again and control the calcium levels and then your pet can be weaned off the medications. As long as the gland causing the problems can be found the surgery is usually successful.
