Female dogs and cats can get infections of the uterus. These animals require surgery to remove the infection as soon as possible. Basically, the surgery entails us going in and performing a spay, but the patients are not as stable because of the large infection going on, so the procedure is more risky at this time. Due to the surgery and the aggressive peri-operative care, many of these animals do very well after the procedure. Once the ovaries are removed they no longer can get a pyometra, unless they are getting hormone from other sources.
