Biopsy is a term used to describe obtaining a small piece of tissue that is felt to be abnormal, whether it is soft tissue or bone, to submit to a pathologist who will look at it under the microscope and get a diagnosis. Once there is a diagnosis, a prognosis can be given and a definitive treatment plan can come be developed, which usually includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of the three.
