The Surgery Consultation Experience
“What to expect from a consultation with Dr. Brdecka”
When you bring in your pet to see Dr. David Brdecka, DVM, DACVS, for a surgical consultation, you will be asked to fill out an information sheet at the front desk. Once that is complete, you and your animal will be taken into a room where Tracie Semanski, CVT, the surgery technician, will come in to do a preliminary exam, including a temperature, pulse and respiratory rate check. She will also ask you specific questions about your pet to be able to get an accurate history of events and previous problems your animal might have had. After Tracie is finished, Dr. Brdecka will discuss the history and information about your pet, as he does a physical exam. If the problems can be determined in the room, he will discuss the options and recommendations at that point. If further diagnostics, such as x-rays or blood work are required, he will explain that and make sure all your questions and concerns are answered before proceeding.
When a diagnosis has been made, further options will be discussed. If surgery is one of the options, which it will likely be, Dr. Brdecka will go through the surgery in detail with you as well as the risks and complications associated with the surgery and anesthesia process. He will also discuss what to expect post surgery, both in the hospital and at home. All questions and concerns will be addressed and a time for surgery will be scheduled. If your pet has a problem that requires that an elective orthopedic procedure be performed, such as cruciate ligament disease, patella luxation, etc., then surgery will be scheduled on a surgery day, most often a Tuesday or Friday. If it requires more emergent attention it will be scheduled ASAP.
Regardless of what type of surgical issue your pet is here for, Dr. Brdecka will be sure to take an ample amount of time to explain things to you and be sure that you are completely comfortable with everything before you leave.
